The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has come under fire in Parliament for failing to appear before the House to answer an urgent Parliamentary question filed in the name of the Member of Parliament for the Juaboso constituency-Kwabena Minta Akandor.
Minority Chief Whip, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, raised an objection to a plea by the Deputy Majority Leader, Sarah Adwoa Safo, on behalf of the Minister who is said to be out of the jurisdiction.
The Deputy Minority Leader had wanted the Speaker to grant permission for the question to be rescheduled for Friday to enable one of the Deputy Ministers from the Ministry to come and provide answers.
According to the Minority Chief Whip, the Minister is notorious for ignoring parliament whenever there is a question that demands his answers. He therefore called on the Speaker to use his good Office to compel the Minister to appear before the House to answer the question in person.
Alhaji Muntaka said, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto was always insisting on Ministers coming to answer his questions in person when he was a Member of Parliament for the Kwadaso constituency. He expressed surprise at the attitude of the minister towards Parliament.
The Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Michael Oquaye, based on the request, directed that the Leadership of the House should communicate to the Office of the Minister for him to appear in person on Friday to answer the question instead of the Deputy.
The Speaker also asked the Leadership to remind the Ministers of State that Parliament has resumed sitting and should therefore make themselves available for parliamentary work.
