The Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Oquaye has directed the Food and Agriculture Ministry to immediately issue a disclaimer on fake Cocoa insecticide on the Ghanaian market and has summoned the Minister to appear before the house on June 5 to present a report on the insecticide causing problems for cocoa farmers.
“Since the report will be ready by the end of May, the first Tuesday in June, he [Minister] should be ready to appear before this House and apprise us of the situation. The first Tuesday of June, the house will like to know what the report says. ” The Speaker said.
The directive followed an urgent question filed by Juaboso MP, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh who wanted to know whether the Minister was aware that an unapproved one liter (1LT) Rockstar cocoa insecticide was already in circulation on the Ghanaian market.
The Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, who appeared before the House to answer the question on behalf of the substantive minister, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto who is said to be out of the country, informed the house that an investigation had already been constituted.
The Minority had earlier on Thursday, rejected a plea for Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto to be excused since he was out of the jurisdiction. The Minority was insisting that the minister appeared in person since they claim he is notorious for ignoring parliament.
The Minority Chief Whip, Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed, had urged the Speaker to use his office to force the Minister to appear before the House.
