Hon Rudolf Nsowine Amenga-Etigo, Member of Parliament (MP ) for Chiana/Paga Constituency in the Upper East Region, has initiated community driven development policies to reduce high level of poverty in the constituency.
The Poverty Reduction Initiative projects, are also aimed at empowering communities to connect people with opportunities that help move them on a path out of extreme poverty toward economic independence.
As part of the MP’s vision for the constituency, he is undertaking capital intensive support projects to communities across the constituency to address the critical issue of poverty that continues to impact the lives of so many.
He told THE REPUBLIC, the focus is on education, health, agriculture, water and sanitation, youth and sports, and community meeting shelters.
According to him, some parents and guardians struggle to pay the school fees of their wards and unemployment is very high, especially among the energetic youth, as sizeable number of the populace are way below the poverty line, indicating that the situation is nothing good to write about.
“It is my policies that people who are living in poverty are given the opportunities and resources they needed to help lead a more stable life. The investment in the constituency will provide increased economic opportunities for the people, especially the young ones who travels to Accra and other Southern part of Ghana to look for non existing jobs,” he added.
Mr Amenga-Etigo who is a Deputy Ranking member on Work and Housing Committee of Parliament made the observation after he presented building materials for Self Assisted CHPs Compound in some communities within the constituency.
Sounding very passionate on the need to reduce poverty level among the people,the lawmaker reiterated his commitment to use the available resources as MP to help deal with the poverty menace among his his people.
He however charged the constituent, not to throw their hands in despair, since there is hope for the constituency, stressing that initiating and implementing policies to reduce poverty remained his priority.
Under the education support programme, the MP has granted Scholarship to 270 students pursuing various courses at both Senior and Junior the High Schools, Teachers and Nursing Training Colleges and Universities.
In addition to that, he had assisted in the continuation of a library project in Sirigu, provision of roofing sheets, woods and nails for Wolingum primary, Aninsore JHS, Pingo JHS and Tazika/Bagtua JHS,
To make physical education lively at the basic schools within the constituency, Hon Amenga-Etigo, further provided some sports equipment for the construction of an athletic oval with football and volleyball pits for the Mirigu Senior High school.
On health and its related problems in the constituency, Lawyer Amenga-Etigo, made available a pickup to provide emergency support for the needy in relationship to their health, especially help in transporting pregnant women when due for delivery.
To ensure that the health needs are met without much difficulties, the MP earmarked an amount of GH C 60, 000 for the extension of some facilities at the Paga and Kassena/Nankana East Health Centres and Kanania CHPS Compound.
He also procured benches and chairs for all CHPS Compounds across the constituency and as well as provided street light to the Kassena/Nankana East Health Centre and adjourning communities.
Touching on Agriculture which is the major occupation of the constituents, Mr Amenga-Etigo at the last season provided 60 water pumping machines, 150 knapsacks to farmers across the constituency and also aided some farmers with seed capital to support their farming activities.
To this effect, he promised to provide more of the water pumping machines for farmers to engage all year farming through irrigation as he lobby intensively with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture through Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA) to support the farmers with fertiliser.
WATER AND SANITATION
On the issue if water which remained the most needed basic necessity in human live, Hon Amenga-Etiga,upon assumption of office as MP, helped to repaired over 52 exiting but broke down boreholes throughout the constituency.
Additionally, he is Drilling of a number of mechanised borehole for some educational institutions including the Chiana, Paga Senior High Schools and Gonum basic school at Mirigu.
The soft spoken MP also intervened and bailed out with an amount of GHS15,000.00 to Sirigu community to pay off its Water System accumulated debt.
To tackle the teeming unemployed, Mr Amena-Etigo provided the various communities youth sporting clubs with a total of 100 sets of Jersey and 50 footballs to organise unity games in each of the three zones.
The aim, he said is to among of other unlock their God given talents in sporting, especially football and to also keep them fit.
The MP also supported the various youth groups with some seed funds to start with self reliance enterprises or business, while supporting others with funds to undertake skill trains in carpentry, Soap making, Tailoring/Seamstress, Wielding and as well as recruitment in the security services.
To empower the rural women with business opportunity to start on their own, the MP has initiated and provided most of the communities with Pavilions and Market Sheds as trading and meeting grounds for the various rural enterprises skills centres.
Some of the these community women groups includes Sirigu-Dazongo, Katiu and SAA, Navio, Sakaa, Kazugu and Nakolo youth and women groups and several others.
The MP has supported for the extension of electricity to some education and health institutions such as Sirigu primary school and Amenga-Etego JHS to national grid.
