The National Police Service of Kenya reported on Friday that it needed the victim of a brutal police assault to avail himself so that the officer at the center of the assault can be charged before the courts.
The video of a policeman severely mistreating a youngman went viral on social media platform, Twitter, late this week. The police in a statement confirmed that they were looking into the incident and that they disapproved of the action.
“Officer captured on video assaulting an individual has been identified and is being processed for disciplinary action. We call upon the individual assaulted to present himself to the Nairobi Area Police Commander for statement recording to facilitate the officer’s trial in court,” the said in a follow-up tweet.
In the said video, the officer is seen standing on a man lying prostrate, whiles talking to the man, the officer goes on to stamp on the head of the man repeatedly. Onlookers and passers-by are unable to intervene in the situation.
It is now known that the recent incident happened somewhere in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. Most new outlets, local and international reported in it whiles thousands of Kenyans continue to condemn it via social media.
Incidentally, it came barely 24 hours after an officer was jailed for killing a suspected phone thief years back. Kenya’s police have been accused by rights groups of high handedness in the discharge of their duties.
Their brutal ways came to the fore during the last elections where they were accused of using extreme policing in opposition strongholds where riots broke out. They have been accused of deaths and rape in the midst of the chaos.
