The Minority NDC group in Parliament has placed a demand on government to publish the Justice Brobbey Commission of Inquiry report on the creation of new regions in the country for Ghanaians to fully abreast themselves with views of stakeholders on the additional regions.
Addressing a press conference in Parliament on Wednesday, the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu indicated that, although the Commission has already submitted its report to government for close to five months ago, the contents of the report have not been made public.
According to him, the content of the report is not even known to Parliament and its Members who are supposed to facilitate the Legislative Instrument necessary for the implementation of the recommendations of the commission.
“Meanwhile, the Constitutional Instrument for the conduct of the referendum, leading to the creation of the proposed regions, has been laid before Parliament to mature in twenty-one sitting days.
“In short, Parliament is being asked to conduct a surgical operation in the dark, having no idea whatsoever whether the Constitutional Instrument conforms in material respects to the recommendations of the Justice Brobbey Commission Report.” He observed.
The Minority group has insisted that the report needs to be published for the citizenry to know what informed the decision to create the regions; the people who favored the creation of the new regions and the reasons adduced; the specific names proposed for the regions as well as the scope of the referendum and who is entitled to vote on it.
“Making public the Justice Brobbey Report will help shed light on the scope of the proposed referendum. The issue has been debated vigorously in the public domain as to who is entitled to vote at the referendum. There should be nothing secret about a report of this nature and we demand full disclosure in the public interest.” He said.
Adding that it was in the interest of good governance, openness, truthfulness and transparency, that the Report of the Commission of Inquiry was made public.
